Dear all;
This is to inform you that XXX, the Coordinator of Anti Homophobie Africaine was arrested on our way back from Kenya where we had been invited by Urgent Action Fund-Fund to attend a conference whose theme was Supporting LGBTI Organising In East African.
He was arrested on Sunday18 June 2006 at Entebbe Airport.
He is charged for allegedly abusing the hospitality accorded to him by the Ugandan government by engainging him self in LGBTI activies which according to the national law are illegal.
have to tell though that XXX is a Congolese and a strong advocate of LGBTI rights here in Uganda. Mid this year he was given 90 days to leave the country because of his involvement in LGBTI advocacy. Ironically his 90 days elapse on 2nd August 2006. Why he is arrested before his days alapse is what is boggling our mind. His refugee status has since been revoked. At the Entebbe Internatioanal Airport Plice Station where he is detained, he has refused to eat nor drink anything. There is threat that he will be deported back to D.R.Congo- from where he had espcaped persecution to seek asylum here- or be deported to Kenya where actually he had just gone to attend a conference.
Please Anything you can do will be highly apppreciated
Yours Truly
XXX
Public Relations Coordinator
Anti Homophobie Africaine.
